He is remembered with honour on St Joseph's Church Roll of Honour and Helensburgh War Memorial, Column 4 Line 32.

The family home was 9, John Street, Helensburgh The son of James Sweeney (gardener) and Bridget Sweeney.
Siblings: Edward had 2 brothers, James and Charles and a sister, Sarah.

 

Edward Sweeney was born in Helensburgh, where his father was a gardener. He followed his father’s profession by becoming a gardener to Mr Kidston of Rosebank.
It is believed that Edward originally joined the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and then transferred to the Black Watch.
Edward died, killed in action, at Hill 41 in Belgium. He was 26 years old.
His name was put forward for the Memorial by his sister, Sarah, who was still living at 11 Colquhoun Square in the town.
His brother James, residing at 34 Blyth Road, West Kensington, London, sent the inscription for his headstone, which read: 'Gone But Not Forgotten'.

James McEwan Sutherland

7th Batt. Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders
He is remembered with honour on the Scottish National War Memorial, St Michael and All Angels Roll of Honour and Helensburgh War Memorial, Column 4 Line 50.

The family home was 7, Giffnock Gardens, Henry Bell Street, Helensburgh The son of the late Robert (badge porter) and Janet Sutherland (nee Cummings), (both deceased).
Siblings: James had a younger brother, Moses.

 

James Sutherland was born in Helensburgh, where his father was a badge porter. He was apprenticed to Wm. Shields & Co., family grocer, before being employed by Mr John Mitchell, Charing Cross.
James married Agnes Wilson, a certificated nurse, and had one daughter, Elizabeth born in September of 1915.
James was wounded in battle in October, 1918 and return to England. He died there in January, 1919 at the age of 34. His remains were returned to Helensburgh for burial.

He is remembered with honour on the Scottish National War Memorial, St. Michael and All Angels Church Roll of Honour and Helensburgh War Memorial, Column 3 Line 30.

The family home was 6, East King Street, and then 43 Grant Street, Helensburgh.The son of the late John Stone and Elizabeth Stone.
Siblings: Frederick had two brothers, his twin Peter, who served as a Sapper in the Royal Engineers and younger brother, Robert, and one sister, Annie.

balmoralFrederick Stone was born at 5 West King Street in Helensburgh with his twin Peter.
Frederick served on the MMR HMS Balmoral, a paddle minesweeper and had been engaged in minesweeping duties in the North Sea and English Channel for over a year, when he died.
Frederick drowned at sea, his body found washed up at Dunkirk Harbour. He was 30 years of age.

He is remembered with honour on the Helensburgh War Memorial, Column 1 Line 44.

The family home was Beulah Lodge, Colquhoun Street, Helensburgh. The son of the late James Stewart (saddler) and Margaret Stewart (nee Scott).
Siblings: James had one brother, Alexander, and two sisters, Margaret and Sarah.

James Stewart was born and brought up in Helensburgh, where his father was a saddler. He attended Hermitage Higher Grade School.

His brother Alexander, a bank clerk, also served and was wounded.

James died of wounds received in battle at the Sandgate Military Hospital, Kent and was buried at Tonbridge Cemetery. He was 29 years old. He was reported as living at Crouch End at the time of his death.

He is remembered with honour on the Canadian National War Memorial, the Menin Gate Memorial and Helensburgh War Memorial, Column 1 Line 45.

The family home was not known. The son of Robert H. Stewart and the late Jeannie

James Stewart was born in Dumbarton. Although little is known about his early life, it is known that he had two years of previous military experience in the 60th Batt. Rifles. The family moved to Canada where James had been working as a clerk. He joined the 5th Batt. Canadian Infantry, Saskatchewan Regt. at the outbreak of war.
His family home at the time was at Ross Street, E. Moose Jaw, Canada. James was living at home and unmarried.
James died of wounds while a prisoner of war, at the age of 28.
His gravestone is inscribed: ‘He was just and feared not he wore the white flower of a blameless life’.

He is remembered with honour on Arras Memorial, the Scottish National War Memorial, Larchfield School Memorial, St Andrew’s Church Roll of Honour and Helensburgh War Memorial, Column 4 Line 31.

The family home was Braeburn, 58 Campbell Street, Helensburgh. The son of Thomas and Elizabeth Stewart.
Siblings: Alexander had two brothers, Archibald and John, and two sisters, Agnes and Annie..

 

Alexander Stewart was born in Helensburgh, where his father was a housebuilder and factor. He was one of twins with brother John. He was educated at Larchfield School and went on to become an apprentice joiner. He enjoyed rugby and cricket.
Alexander firstly joined the 9th Batt. of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, later transferring to the 7th Batt. Alexander died, killed in action, at Arras. He was 26 years of age. His remains were not recovered.

He is remembered with honour on the Scottish National War Memorial, St Columba’s Church Roll of Honour and Helensburgh War Memorial, Column 1 Line 43.

The family home was Woodend Farm, 40, Queen Street, Helensburgh The son of William and Janet Steven.
Siblings: William had four brothers, Allan, James, Robert and John and one sister, Agnes.

William Steven was born and brought up in Helensburgh, where his father was a farmer. He was educated at Hermitage Higher Grade School and then Glasgow Technical College where he was a student of architecture / land surveying. He trained in the offices of Messrs Sturrock and Wilson, Architects, Glasgow. He was fond of outdoor sports and a keen member of the swimming club. He also bred poultry.

William died in a tragic accident whilst fishing at Cupar, Fife, when he was shot by another off-duty soldier who was out shooting rabbits.

He was buried at Helensburgh Cemetery with full military honours.

The family home was 1, Glenavon Street, Govan The son of William Turnbull, (mercantile clerk) and Elizabeth Stark (nee Ramsay).
Siblings: Harold had three brothers, William, Gilbert and Allan, and three sisters, Elizabeth, Janet and Eleanor.
Harold Stark was born in Helensburgh and brought up in Govan, where his father was a mercantile clerk.
He was training as a banker with the Union Bank of Scotland, Buchanan Street, Glasgow, before enlisting.
Harold died, killed in action, at Gallipoli. He was 19 years of age. His remains were not recovered.

He is remembered with honour on the St Columba’s Church Roll of Honour, Helensburgh and Gareloch Unionist Association Roll of Honour and Helensburgh War Memorial, Column 4 Line 30.

The family home was 12, Glennan Gardens, Helensburgh The son of the late Robert and Mrs Margaret Spy
Siblings: Bruce had two brothers, Andrew and Robert, and three sisters, Jasemina, Louise and Jean.

Bruce Spiers

Bruce Spy was born in Helensburgh and educated at Hermitage Higher Grade School. He was employed with his brother, Andrew Spy, Coal Merchants, in the town before joining up.

He enlisted in the 3rd Batt. Scottish Horse in August 1915, serving in Gallipoli and Egypt before transferring to the Cameron Highlanders and serving in Serbia. He received the Military Medal for Bravery in the Field and the Cross of Kara-Georg (2nd class), given by the King of Serbia for distinguished service.

After being discharged due to a wound in his foot, Bruce died at home from malaria, influenza and pneumonia. He is buried in Rhu Churchyard.
